Jan Olbrycht is a doctor of sociology, lecturer, expert on EU funds and regional policy, social activist and politician.

Former mayor of Cieszyn (Poland) and Marshal of the Silesian Region (Poland), he strongly advocates for the urban dimension. He has worked over the years for the Association of Polish Cities, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, the Assembly of European Regions and was a member of the National Council for Regional Policy.

He has been serving as a member of the European Parliament since 2004. He is Vice-president of the European People's Party Group and works in the REGI, BUDG and CONT parliamentary committees.

As a long-standing participant and supporter of regional and local politics, he is co-founder, member and chairman of the "Urban Environment" intergroup in the European Parliament.
